Join us on Friday 3rd June for our exciting Jubilee street party. Like the rest of the nation, we’re bringing out the bunting in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th year on the throne. The year 2022 marks 70 years since Her Majesty took over from her father and the Jubilee celebrates all the great work that she has done for our country in that time.

What’s On

Lion Walk is celebrating the event with our independent retailers at Red Lion Yard. We’ll be offering a range of food and drinks for you to enjoy along with some other exciting additions…

LOCAL SCHOOLS LION WALK OLYMPIC ART PROJECT

To celebrate this year’s Olympics Lion Walk Shopping Centre & Red Lion Yard in Colchester town centre asked four local schools to create works of art depicting the Olympic ethos, its iconic symbols and what the games mean to the pupils.

Pupils from Lexden Springs, Kingswode Hoe, St John’s Green and St Thomas More’s schools spent part of their summer terms designing and making a variety of colourful pieces of art to celebrate the Olympics.

The art was unveiled with the help of pupils from St John’s Green and Lexden Spring schools and will be on display in the centre throughout the summer while the Olympics and Paralympics are taking place.

Peter Scopes, Lion Walk & Red Lion Yard Centre Manager said: “This is one of those rare things we get to do, nowhere near often enough, that lets us say a huge thank you to Colchester. These children, through their work, have not only displayed the Olympic themes, but also the values of the communities they come from. The designs look fantastic and all the children involved should be so very proud of what they’ve created. When people pay us a visit through the summer we’d like for everyone to take a moment out of their day to take a look and reflect on what it means to live with values of Friendship, Respect and Excellence.”

The children learnt about the Olympic values and ethos defined by the mottos CITIUS – ALTUIS – FORTIUS (meaning Faster – Higher – Stronger) and Excellence, Friendship and Respect, which they have illustrated through their displays. They also learnt about the countries competing in the games including food, animals and traditions as well as discovering the huge number of different sports that make up the Olympics.

The pupils explored art through a variety of mediums and materials and have created the imaginative, colourful and illustrative pieces for the Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard display.

Lexden Springs School, on the Halstead Road west of Colchester, caters for pupils aged 3 – 19 years with educational needs. Pupils from the school took part in a sponsored swim to cover the distance from Colchester to Rio in the school swimming pool (equating one length to one mile). The swim raised money for outdoor play and educational equipment for the school. The pupils made flags to represent a selection of countries competing in the Olympics which are now displayed as bunting in Red Lion Yard.

Kingswode Hoe School, the Sussex Road community day special school for girls and boys from 5 to 16 years old who have moderate learning difficulties, designed wonderfully colourful pieces of artwork to symbolise what the Olympics meant to them.

St Thomas More’s, a Catholic primary school in the town centre created Olympic flags and rings filled with landmarks, animals and foods associated with the participating countries, and festival masks to represent Rio, the host city.

And finally, St John’s Green Primary – near Abbey Field – produced artwork to represent each word of the Olympic motto, to be displayed as window vinyls Lion Walk.

Muffin Break opens at Lion Walk Shopping Centre

Muffin Break the popular café bakery, renowned for freshly baked goods and great coffee has opened its first store in Colchester at Lion Walk Shopping Centre. The new venture has created 15 part- and full-time opportunities for the town.

Muffin Break is located in a large unit beside the Library and Holland & Barrett. To celebrate the opening, the first 50 lucky customers through the door received a golden voucher. This contained a free freshly made item from the menu, such as a coffee, muffin or flatbread, so customers could sample some of the brand’s favourites. The Muffin Man mascot was also in the centre handing out balloons to entertain the youngsters.

Martin Leatherdale, centre manager at Lion Walk Shopping Centre said: “We’re delighted to have Muffin Break joining us at the centre. They’re a popular brand and I’ve no doubt they will be a huge success with our customers, as well as a positive asset for the centre, encouraging people to come and visit.”

Muffin Break’s stores and menu utilise seasonal produce with their onsite kitchens providing freshly baked goods daily, whilst catering to a range of dietary needs including gluten-free, dairy-free, Vegan and light options.

Joshua Nixon, Head of Estates at Muffin Break said: “Colchester has been a target town for many years, and we are excited to open our first Muffin Break in the town in a beautiful corner unit at the entrance to Lion Walk Shopping centre. We believe that there is a real gap in the market here for a high-quality coffee offer and we are looking forward to showcasing our new vegan and breakfast offering. Lion Walk Shopping Centre boasts the strongest footfall in the town and Muffin Break will a great addition to an already strong tenant mix.

Colchester will be our third new store opening this month, following Hastings and Poole and we are pleased to still be on an expansion drive despite the challenging retail market. Demand from Landlords and franchisees for new stores remains strong and we have a busy pipeline ahead in the run up to Christmas.”

NEW CENTRE MANAGER TAKING ‘PRIDE’ IN LION SPONSORSHIP

Lion Walk’s new centre manager is off to a roaring start after putting the official sponsorship of Colchester Zoo’s lion enclosure at the top of his to do list.

John Fleming, who lives in Blackheath, spent more than two decades in the Royal Military Police before starting a new career in shopping centre management several years ago.  He has been part of the Lion Walk management team since November 2013 and was appointed as centre manager last month.

The sponsorship of Colchester Zoo’s lion enclosure is John’s first big initiative as centre manager and forms a key part of his plans to strengthen Lion Walk’s existing partnerships and build new relationships within the town.

John, who is originally from the North East of England, said: “I was based at Colchester Garrison for 10 years and my children were born here, so it very much feels like home.

“Colchester has so much to offer and I’m proud to be part of one of its top shopping destinations.  By working together with the Council, other retailers and visitor attractions I believe we can make our fantastic town centre even better.

“Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard’s names have a natural synergy with Colchester Zoo and sponsoring the lion enclosure is a chance to celebrate this in a fun way.  We’ll be working in partnership throughout the year ahead and have lots of exciting plans up our sleeves.”

Colchester Zoo celebrated its 50th birthday last year with a herd of colourful giraffe statues placed around the town, including one at Lion Walk.  The zoo is delighted to be strengthening this link with the sponsorship of the lion enclosure and is looking forward to working in partnership with Lion Walk.

Colchester Zoo is home to a male African lion called Bailey and two lionesses called Malika and Naja. domain ip

Your very own poem…

Follow the tapping of typewriter keys and flurry of bubbles to find The Poetry Machine. Beth will ask you about your thoughts, feelings, memories and hopes for Colchester. She will weave your words into a beautiful, unique poem, live in the moment, and give you the original poem to keep.
