AMERICAN DINER WITH MODERN TWIST OPENS IN RED LION YARD

The East Coast Diner & Bar has opened its doors in the historic Red Lion Yard, in the heart of Colchester. This is the second branch of the restaurant. Owned and operated by directors Lex Quinn and Julie Officer, the duo opened their first diner in Woodbridge in January 2013.

Offering a modern take on the classic American styled dining concept, by day the 810 sq ft Colchester East Coast Diner is perfect for breakfast, coffee and donut or a after school milkshake. In the evening a warm and welcoming atmosphere makes it the perfect meeting place for friends and couples wanting to enjoy a meal, freshly made cocktails and craft beers. It’s also great for long Sunday brunches.

The food served at the East Coast Diner can best be described as gourmet fast food and its trademark “Big Apple Hotdog” has been described as the best in Britain by The Times renowned columnist and restaurant critic Giles Coren.

The restaurant interior fuses quirky American with the historic features of a 600 year old, Grade I listed building. Art by London Street artist Tom Blackmore creates a contemporary feel and guests can choose to dine at higher bar tables or at more traditional ones. One American padded booth is also available.

Lex Quinn Owner and Director said: “We are very pleased with opening our second branch here in Colchester. Although it’s Britain’s oldest recorded town it feels very young in spirit. The town is both dynamic and vibrant and offers great shopping which is why we chose the location. We also felt that the recently refurbished Red Lion Yard with all quirky independent stores offered the perfect location for our diner.”

Louise Jensen Deputy Centre Manager of Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard said: “The East Coast Diner complements our tenant mix perfectly in Red Lion Yard and we are very excited about having a restaurant at the centre. Since we completed the refurbishment of the Yard in July (2014), we are now almost fully let and shoppers can enjoy a truly unique mix of independent retailers here and now also stop for a meal.”

APPLES & PEARS FIRST POP-UP STORE COMES TO RED LION YARD 20 – 21 JUNE

Apples & Pears, an online clothing retailer offering affordable fashion for women size 14 and over, is opening its first ever pop-up store in 10/11 Red Lion Yard for two days this weekend (Saturday and Sunday 20 -21 June).

Apples & Pears is run and owned by Liz Smith, who set up the online shop two years ago. Smith’s passion for fashion coupled with her desire to build her brand and be able to offer more customers her collection of  gorgeous ‘feel good clothes’ that inspired her to open the pop up store.

Apples & Pears has never had a physical store presence before, however with customers saying that they wanting to see, feel and try on the clothes before buying, the owner decided to press ahead with her first pop-up concept.

Apples & Pears will be open 9.30am to 5.30pm, offering customers the opportunity to see a wide range of the fashion items available online. On the same day a live model will be in the store showcasing some of the carefully put together outfits plus customers will also be able to get fashion and make-up advice.  The store will be open from 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sunday.

Customers visiting the pop-up store over the weekend will also be able to get 20% off online on selected items.

Commenting on the store, Liz Smith said: “I am really excited over running my first physical store this weekend, it will be amazing to be able to showcase my colourful range directly to new and existing customers. With an already strong customer base here in Colchester and the quirky boutique feel that Red Lion Yard offers it seems like the perfect opportunity and location for me to try out my concept. I hope shoppers come and see us over the weekend and also take advantage of the fashion and make-up advice we offer.”

BABY BOUTIQUE STALKS COUTURE BRINGS UNIQUE OFFER TO COLCHESTER

Stalks Couture, a new independent luxury baby boutique, opened in the historic Red Lion Yard in the heart of Colchester on Saturday (28 February 2015). The store offers a wide range of top quality baby products from designer baby-clothing to prams, from nappy bags to beautifully handcrafted nursery furniture.

The attractively fitted out, well-stocked baby shop, which also has an online store, is home to brands including Babymel, Coco Bow, Furnique, Nova Harley and Ruby Freddies.

Delivering excellent service to its customers is a top priority for Stalks Couture. Shoppers visiting the 432 sq ft boutique will not only receive a warm welcome but also be offered a personal up-close service designed to ensure that each customer gets the products and outfits that are just right for their needs.

Stalks Couture is a family-run business founded by mum-of-two Vicki Morris, who moved from London to Colchester in 2011. While settling in Colchester to raise her first child she identified a gap in the market for a baby store that could provide a broader range of products that parents need for their toddlers without having to drive to another town or order online. With a wealth of customer service experience Morris decided to follow her dream of starting her own business.

Morris chose Red Lion Yard for her first store, but is set on scaling up and opening another store in Chelmsford once the brand has become established.

Commenting on the store, Vicki Morris said: “I’m extremely excited about opening my first store here in Red Lion Yard. I feel that we are bringing a unique, much-needed offer to Colchester, particularly when so many young families are choosing to settle in the town. Red Lion Yard really caught my attention after last summer’s refurbishment. The units are bright and airy and just the right size for someone starting a business. We also loved the quirky classy feel the Yard offers and its prominent location between the High Street and Lion Walk Shopping Centre.”

CELEBRATE THE OLYMPIC SPIRIT AT LION WALK & RED LION YARD

Colchester’s Lion Walk Shopping Centre and Red Lion Yard are inviting shoppers to join them in celebrating the 2016 Olympics and Paralympics.

Three brightly coloured, Olympic information towers are now on display in the centre. Each tower represents one word of the Olympic motto, FASTER-HIGHER-STRONGER and provides visitors with the opportunity to learn more about corresponding Olympic and Paralympic records, fun facts, plus the not-to-be-missed opportunity to win £100 to spend at the Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard store(s) of your choice.

Do you know what the world’s strongest insect is or how many humans an elephant could lift? Who is the fastest sprinter of all time and would he beat a lion, a coyote or a zebra in a race? What’s the highest recorded high jump and how does that compare to a flea, a grasshopper or a horse?

Find out the answers to these and many more on our FASTER-HIGHER-STRONGER Olympic towers. Plus, Culver Walk will be showcasing a fascinating display illustrating the various sizes of all the different balls used in Olympic Sports.

There is also the opportunity to put your strength to the test and attempt to lift the weight of the men’s Olympic shot put, which, at 16 pounds, is the equivalent of 16 footballs or 48 bananas!

You’ll be amazed by some of our incredible Olympic fun facts and have the opportunity to enter our competition. You can even enter there and then using our free wifi!

Shoppers are invited to find the four Gold Winning Words, one on each tower and one on the Olympic Ball display in Culver Walk and enter the Lion Walk Olympic competition to be in with a chance of winning £100 to spend at the Lion Walk & Red Lion Yard store or stores of their choice.

Once you’ve found the four Gold Winning Words you will need to complete the entry form on the Lion Walk website which can be found under the What’s On tab.

These Olympic installations follow the unveiling of the local schools Olympic artwork in the centre last month (July 2016). Four local schools, Kingswode Hoe, St John’s Green, Lexden Springs and St Thomas More’s created wonderful pieces of artwork to celebrate the Olympics and what the Games mean to them. Their creations are currently on display as bunting in Red Lion Yard and window vinyls on Trinity Square.

All the Olympic displays will remain in place throughout the Olympics and Paralympics, with the competition closing on the same day, Sunday 18 September at 5pm.

COLCHESTER SHOPPERS DREAM OF SPENDING VALENTINE’S DAY WITH A CELEBRITY

A recent survey carried out at Lion Walk Shopping Centre & Red Lion Yard in Colchester town centre reveals that 23% of shoppers would like to spend Valentine’s Day with a celebrity. Stars on shoppers wish lists included Bradley Cooper, Kylie Minogue, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kelly Brook. But, it would seem that on the whole Colchester people are very much in love – with an overwhelming majority (nearly 70%) saying that the person they would most like to spend Valentine’s Day with is their current partner.

Nearly 80% of people taking part in the fun street poll – which was carried out in the shopping centre over the two weekends before Valentine’s Day – said they were planning to buy someone a Valentine’s gift, while a surprising 20% had other plans.

Shoppers were also asked what gift they would like to receive on Valentine’s Day. Most wished for traditional Valentine’s gifts such as jewellery (15%) followed by perfume (9%), flowers (8%) and chocolates (7.5%). Nearly 10% shoppers were hoping for something a little more adventurous – such as a spa day or even a holiday.

Louise Jensen Deputy Centre Manager commented:

“We thought it would be fun to find out who shoppers wanted to spend Valentine’s Day with. To be honest, we expected more people to dream of spending it with someone famous. I think it’s quite romantic that so many shoppers in Colchester would rather be with their real partner on Valentine’s Day than with anyone else in the world!

“The run up to Valentine’s Day is always very busy in Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard, with shoppers looking to find that perfect gift for the one they love. This year promises to be even bigger as the big day falls on a Saturday. With our great mix of big brand stores in Lion Walk and the quirky independents in Red Lion Yard, there’s something here just right for every taste and pocket. To make the day extra special, shoppers can also stop off at the East Coast Diner for Valentine’s cocktails before they go home or even stay out and enjoy a romantic Valentine’s dinner at the Red Lion Hotel.”

COLCHESTER ZOO LEGACY STATUE TO BE UNVEILED AT LION WALK

A giraffe statue commissioned as a legacy to Colchester Zoo’s Stand Tall For Giraffes campaign will soon be settling into its new home at Lion Walk Shopping Centre.

The two-metre tall giraffe, which was designed by local school girl Lauren Connell from St Luke’s Primary in Tiptree, will be installed in early June. It follows a large-scale public art event last year (2013) that saw the zoo install more than 100 colourful giraffe statues across the county as part of its 50th birthday celebrations.

John Fleming, Lion Walk centre manager, said: “Lion Walk was lucky enough to host one of the hugely popular Stand Tall For Giraffes statues last year and we didn’t hesitate when the zoo asked if we could find a permanent home for the legacy statue. We’re looking forward to unveiling our new arrival in all her glory next month.”

The legacy statue will be called Zoe and feature a creative design reflecting several animal species supported by Colchester Zoo, including Amur Tigers and Leopards. Visitors will be able to watch local artist Jenny Leonard bringing the design to life at the zoo on Saturday 24 May and Sunday 25 May.

Alex Downing, Development Director at Colchester Zoo, said: “People have told us how much they miss the colourful Stand Tall For Giraffes statues so we’re pleased to be celebrating the campaign’s legacy with a more permanent version. As the sponsor of our lion enclosure and great supporter of the zoo as a whole, Lion Walk seemed the natural choice of location.”

The Stand Tall For Giraffes campaign raised funds and awareness for Colchester Zoo’s charity, Action for the Wild. For more information, visit www.actionforthewild.org.

EDGY FASHION STORE WHITE DIRT OPENS IN RED LION YARD

White Dirt, a new edgy independent fashion boutique offering the best of fashion and creativity under one roof, is due to open soon in the recently refurbished Red Lion Yard in the heart of Colchester. The shop is currently being fitted out and it is hoped that the doors will open over the weekend (18 – 19 October).

The 305 sq ft store brings a strong line-up of fashion brands, many of which are completely new to Colchester, including Cheap Monday, Illustrated People, Serge DeNîmes and House of Sunny. A truly unique interior to the store fuses weathered wooden floors, exposed brickwork and a bare concrete ceiling with sleek, polished features. The whole vision behind the White Dirt concept, whether it is the brands stocked, the music played in store or the interior, is to merge different styles and materials, to make them work together.

White Dirt was founded by Loïs Mills and Will Randlesome, who met while studying at Nottingham Trent University in 2010. Randlesome, originally from Colchester, comes from a construction background, with a degree in quantity surveying and commercial construction management and Mills has a fashion background, with a degree in fashion, communication and promotion. The pair have years of experience in their specialist fields, but have dreamt of opening their own business since University. This is the couple’s first store but they plan to open more stores in London and the South East within the next five years.

Mills said: “We are extremely excited about opening our first store and pursuing our dream of running our own business. To open in Red Lion Yard was the perfect option for us, as we truly love the boutique feel the Yard offers – quite unlike any other part of Colchester. We feel that White Dirt’s quirky interior and individual offer fits perfectly with the interesting mixture of independent retailers Red Lion Yard has attracted since its recent refurbishment.”

Colchester-based Nicholas Percival is letting agent for the available units at Red Lion Yard.

ENTERPRISE IN EDUCATION PARTNERSHIP CELEBRATES SUCCESS OF “COLCHESTER INTO WORK” PROGRAMME

The Enterprise in Education Partnership celebrated the success of its Colchester Into Work Programme yesterday (16 December) by inviting sponsors to attend the Celebration of Achievements Ceremony at Colchester Castle.

The eight-week programme, which sets out to help job seekers to build confidence and necessary skills to move closer to employment, was initially launched in October 2014. On this occasion the initiative aimed to provide support for single mothers. The Enterprise in Education team has worked in close collaboration with local businesses and organisations, including Lion Walk, Culver Square, Colchester Borough Council, Williams & Griffin and Debenhams, which have all contributed to the successful outcome of the initiative. The team behind the Colchester Into Work programme operates from offices in Red Lion Yard next to Lion Walk shopping centre where several of the activities take place.

A total of 18 participants of the Colchester Into Work Programme have successfully completed either a work placement at a retail store in the town or undertaken voluntary work in the community as well as taking part in weekly training to improve IT skills, interview and CV writing techniques and develop team building skills.

Louise Jensen Deputy Centre Manager at Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard, said: “We are very pleased with the opportunity to be involved with the Colchester Into Work Programme and to give young people a chance to develop those essential skills necessary to have when working in a retail environment. The programme has really been mutually beneficial to jobseekers and businesses alike and it’s encouraging to hear that several young people have found a job as a result of the programme.”

Jenny Healy from The Enterprise in Education Partnership said: “This bespoke employability programme has been a huge success due to a combination of positive factors: the willing participants, the motivational guest speakers, and the incredible support from local Business Partners and large Corporates, which have combined to re-energise, re-focus and re-engage these single parents. It has been our privilege to work with such inspiring women who are ready to return to the work force better prepared and with a sense of self-worth and great confidence.”

EXHIBITION CELEBRATES REGENERATION & RENAISSANCE IN COLCHESTER TOWN CENTRE

The Colchester Town Centre Team, a group of Colchester town centre businesses including Lion Walk, private organisations and public bodies, has organised an exhibition to promote the regeneration and renaissance that is taking place in the town centre and is inviting feedback from the public about the evolution of the town centre now and in the future.

The Town Centre First exhibition opens to the public at 10am on Saturday, 11July and is open every day from 10am to 4pm until Sunday 26 July.

Well known for being the UK’s oldest recorded town, in 2015 Colchester is also one of the fastest growing areas in the country.  Around £3.5 billion is currently being invested in the borough, of which more than £500 million is being spent in the town centre on projects as diverse as free WiFi and gaining a Purple Flag quality mark for the town as a place to go out in the evening to major development schemes such as the Williams & Griffin redevelopment and the St Botolph’s Quarter.

The exhibition aims to show what an exciting and important time this is for Colchester, looking at what’s happened in the last few years and what’s in the pipeline.

Backed by Williams & Griffin, Colchester’s two shopping centres (Culver Square and Lion Walk) plus independent retailers as well as Colchester Council, the exhibition is being held in the old Job Centre at 138 High Street, Colchester.

Commenting on the exhibition, William & Griffin Managing Director Carl Milton said:

“Colchester town centre is a vibrant, exciting place to be right now. There has been a real renaissance in the town centre over recent years and, with so much private and public money earmarked for regeneration over the next five years, the future looks very positive.  The synergy between Colchester’s culture and heritage and the commercial heart of the town centre continues to be very special and it isvital that this is supported and protected for the long-term benefit of the local community and the local economy.”

Cllr Bill Frame, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development, said: “As the borough grows the town centre needs to evolve as a competitive, relevant focal point.  Change can be difficult, but it’s also exciting.  Supporting and protecting the development of the town centre is vital if Colchester is to continue to grow.”

Members of the public that are unable to visit the exhibition will be able to see a summary of the exhibition at www.colchesterpresents.co.uk where there will also be a online feedback form or they can email info@colchesterpresents.co.uk with their comments about the regeneration of Colchester town centre or for further information.
