One of Colchester’s most historic corners is about to become even more special.
Plans have been approved to reveal a hidden Roman mosaic beneath a brand-new glass floor in the heart of Red Lion Yard. First uncovered in the 1850s and rediscovered in 2023, the mosaic will be displayed publicly for the first time in around 1,800 years. Visitors will soon be able to look directly down onto this incredible piece of history as they explore the yard.
The mosaic will be carefully protected within a purpose-built structure, with a glazed floor panel allowing it to be enjoyed safely by everyone passing through. Once complete, this will be a free, year-round heritage attraction, adding a historic twist to a visit to Red Lion Yard’s unique shops and eateries.
Work is expected to be finished in the second half of 2026.
