HOW MANY COLCHESTER DADS WILL GET THEIR PETROLHEAD DREAMS FULFILLED TOMORROW?

A special pre-Father’s Day survey carried out at Lion Walk Shopping Centre & Red Lion Yard in Colchester town centre earlier today (Saturday 20 June 2015) revealed that the gift Colchester dads would most like to receive is a car (and it’s also the gift Colchester women would most like to give their dad).

Dads were asked “if money was no object, what gift would you most like to receive for Father’s Day?”, while women were asked “If money was no object, what gift would you most like to give your dad”.  More than 35% of respondents mentioned some sort of car, while others thought even bigger -with one Dad suggesting that he might like airplane and another a yacht!

And, Colchester men are not going to be happy with just any car!   The vehicles on the town’s dads’ wish lists range from a quite modest VW Beetle via Porsche and BMW to an Aston Martin DB9, Bentley and the eye-poppingly expensive Bugatti Veyron.

Dads also requested a night out, shoes, a holiday or a gold ring.  Women wanted to buy their dad a new house (or mansion in one case) or to pay off their mortgage, or treat them to a holiday.

The good news is that some Colchester dads have their feet firmly on the ground – when asked the “if money was no object, what gift would you most like to receive for Fathers’ Day?” question, one Colchester father replied “socks”.  Guess which dad is most likely to get his wish come true!

The survey was undertaken as part of The Lions’ Den, Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard’s special Chill Out Zone for dads & their kids set up in the centre today.  With comfy seating, magazines and newspapers to read, nibbles and samples supplied by some of the businesses in the two centres, great music, table football and computer games, the “man creche” proved to be popular – the perfect antidote to a hectic shopping trip and providing a little bit of pre-Father’s Day down time for Dads.

HUGE SUCCESS FOR SANTA’S MAGICAL POST OFFICE IN LION WALK & RED LION YARD

Santa’s Magical Post Office in Colchester’s historic Red Lion Yard, which links the popular Lion Walk Shopping Centre with the High Street, has been a huge success to date with more than 600 children having already visited to write their letter to Santa and there is still plenty of time to go.

Colchester children’s wish lists have been varied but traditional toys such as LEGO (7% of kids) and “a doll” (6%) have been the most popular. One child just asked for happiness for his family.  A car, a bike, an iPad or smart phone have also been popular requests among the children.   Some really brave kids would like a dinosaur for Christmas whereas quite a few have asked for a reindeer.  Many children have said they would be happy with a surprise.

For kids who haven’t written their letter yet there is still time to visit Santa’s Post Office where Santa’s elves are on hand to help to decorate the letter to make sure each one really stands out, then post it in the enchanted Post Box and watched the letter travel all the way to Lapland on the magic map.  Santa’s Post Office is open next on late night shopping Wednesday 16 December from 4pm to 8pm and then Saturday 19 December and Sunday 20 December from 11am to 4pm. Plus Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 December.

Every letter that’s posted in the box will get a response from the big man himself, so don’t forget to include a return address!

And, Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard are grrreat places for Christmas shopping, where shoppers can be sure to track down some roaringly good gifts and fabulous festive fashions in the big brand names stores and independents stores.

IGL Boutique is Now Open

This month we’re giving a warm Lion Walk welcome to IGL Boutique. Among our fabulous Jubilee celebrations, the Mayor and Mayoress of Colchester came down to Lion Walk themselves to cut the ribbon and open up the new shop offering handmade gemstone jewellery, ladies’ fashion, accessories, handbags and more.

However, IGL (Inspiregems.london) is not just about fashion. They’re about feeling good about yourself, empowering yourself and inspiring women to feel confident, peaceful and happy. They believe that beauty comes from within.

Their handpicked fashion collection ranges from summer silks, cotton and linens to winter wools and cashmere. In addition, the shop offers an extensive range of beautiful and affordable fashion accessories to suit all shapes, styles and sizes. There’s also a handpicked leather and non-leather collection of fashion bags to browse for all styles and budgets.

Our favourite part of IGL Boutique is the handmade collection, which is exclusive to the store and handmade by Karen. She crafts affordable, bespoke jewellery made from sterling silver, including gemstone jewellery which perfectly flaunts the attributes of crystals and gemstones. What we like about the handmade collection is that it’s an opportunity to own a unique piece of jewellery – both beautiful and inspiring.

Finally, IGL Boutique offers an affordable collection of gifts, handpicked to be inspirational and personal whether it’s a gift to yourself, for a friend or for a loved one.

Lion Walk donates new bike and scooter racks to local school

We are delighted to have donated some new bike and scooter racks to North Primary School. The racks accommodate up to 20 bicycles and 20 scooters and will help the children enjoy a more active lifestyle.

Lisa Eves, Health Coach at North Primary School, said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to Lion Walk Shopping Centre for supporting our school and donating the racks. They will make a real difference to many of our students who enjoy scooting or biking into school as well as reinforcing our efforts to encourage pupils to be more active each day.

“Through the teaching and awareness initiatives we have implemented in school, we have seen a real increase in the number of students who cycle and scoot here each day. Up until now, we hadn’t had any racks for the children which meant they had to lock them to the railings outside school which we didn’t feel was very safe.

“Now that we have a secure area on the premises, we are confident that even more students will start to scoot and cycle to school, benefitting their own health and helping to make a difference to the environment.”

Located on John Harper Street in Colchester, North Primary School educates 451 pupils between the ages of 3 and 11.  The school places a focus on healthy living and runs a number of initiatives including extra-curricular sporting activities, healthy cooking classes and an early morning fitness breakfast club to encourage children to lead healthy lifestyles.

North Primary School has also recently held its first cycling proficiency or Bikeability course for year 6 pupils in a further effort to encourage more children onto their bikes and to teach them how to use them safely when out on the roads.

Peter Scopes, Shopping Centre Manager, Lion Walk Shopping Centre, said: “We are delighted that we have been able to support these local school children by providing the racks for them to store their bikes and scooters securely during the school day.

“Encouraging kids to be healthy and lead an active life is very important and we hope that the new facilities will result in more pupils at North Primary School making their way to and from school in a fun and fit way!”

Lion Walk’s Extravagant Christmas Light Switch On 2018

On Wednesday 18th November, Lion Walk held our annual Christmas Light Switch On. Colchester’s Deputy Mayor, Nick Hope switched on the festive lights, followed by a dazzling firework display, bringing a big bang to the evening. Musical icon, Abbie Hartley took the stage, along with Theatretrain, who delivered a fun packed performance. Helen Connelly and the Colchester Institute also added buzz to the atmosphere with entrancing performances. To top the night off, Santa wowed the audience, practicing magic tricks with the aid of his trusty elves, who mingled amongst the crowd and showed off their eye catching juggling skills.
