NEW CENTRE MANAGER TAKING ‘PRIDE’ IN LION SPONSORSHIP

Lion Walk’s new centre manager is off to a roaring start after putting the official sponsorship of Colchester Zoo’s lion enclosure at the top of his to do list.

John Fleming, who lives in Blackheath, spent more than two decades in the Royal Military Police before starting a new career in shopping centre management several years ago.  He has been part of the Lion Walk management team since November 2013 and was appointed as centre manager last month.

The sponsorship of Colchester Zoo’s lion enclosure is John’s first big initiative as centre manager and forms a key part of his plans to strengthen Lion Walk’s existing partnerships and build new relationships within the town.

John, who is originally from the North East of England, said: “I was based at Colchester Garrison for 10 years and my children were born here, so it very much feels like home.

“Colchester has so much to offer and I’m proud to be part of one of its top shopping destinations.  By working together with the Council, other retailers and visitor attractions I believe we can make our fantastic town centre even better.

“Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard’s names have a natural synergy with Colchester Zoo and sponsoring the lion enclosure is a chance to celebrate this in a fun way.  We’ll be working in partnership throughout the year ahead and have lots of exciting plans up our sleeves.”

Colchester Zoo celebrated its 50th birthday last year with a herd of colourful giraffe statues placed around the town, including one at Lion Walk.  The zoo is delighted to be strengthening this link with the sponsorship of the lion enclosure and is looking forward to working in partnership with Lion Walk.

Colchester Zoo is home to a male African lion called Bailey and two lionesses called Malika and Naja. domain ip

NEW JEWELLERY STORE ADDS SPLASH OF ICE

Splash of Ice, a new boutique specialising in high quality handmade silver jewellery, opened in the newly refurbished Red Lion Yard in the heart of Colchester on Friday, 15 August.

The 169 sq ft store offers an exclusive range of high-quality, handmade designer silver jewellery sourced from across the world including necklaces, rings, chains, earrings and pendants.

The shop also provides a bespoke service to create custom jewellery for customers with specific requirements. This allows customers to get a truly unique piece of jewellery ideal as a gift for special occasions including milestone birthdays, weddings and engagements.

Splash of Ice is an independent family run business by a mother Diane Gardner and her two daughters Rachel Connew and Sarah Gardner. All three are passionate about fine jewellery. The family successfully opened its first store 5 years ago in Chelmsford and, with demand for their quality products riding high, is now opening a second branch in Colchester.

Rachel Connew Owner said: “We are very excited about opening our second store. We believe Colchester, particularly Red Lion Yard is the ideal location. Our tailor made service is what makes us stand out as it allows our customers to find a truly unique piece of jewellery whether it is a gift or a piece to wear for a special occasion they are looking for”.

To celebrate the opening Splash of Ice is offering 10% off its entire range on Friday 15 August and Saturday 16 August to its first 20 customers each day.

Commenting on the opening, Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard centre manager John Fleming said: “Splash of Ice is the second new boutique to open in Red Lion Yard since it was relaunched in July following a major refurbishment. Interiors store Maison White opened a couple of weeks ago and is trading really well. Plus, there are several other deals in the pipeline. It’s great to see the Yard filling up with interesting independent retailers that complement those already there as well as the big brand stores in the adjacent Lion Walk.”

Our BIGGEST Christmas Light Switch On Yet!

Lion Walk Shopping Centre had its biggest ever Christmas light switch on! With a day of music and entertainment as well as a showstopping visit from The X Factor: Celebrity finalist, Megan McKenna.

Thank you so much to all who came down and celebrated with us on the evening.

Our Brilliant Busy Bees and Friends Event

We had a brilliant Busy Bees and Friends event last week. The event was designed to educate and entertain our visitors on the importance of bees and it created a real buzz around the Centre.

The event beginning on Thursday 31 May ran until Saturday 2 June and saw hundreds of our visitors take part in fun-filled activities and workshops on all things bees and bugs related. We were lucky enough to have talks from experts Adrian Knowles, from The Wildlife Trust and John Taylor, from Bumblebee Conversation Trust (BBCT). The talks proved very popular with those keen to learn more about how essential these creatures are to our eco-system.

Alongside the talks, children were able to create their own bee wings and listen to book readings all from inside an eye catching giant inflatable beehive. We also created a buzzy bee trail for visitors to follow.

Our Centre Manager, Peter Scopes said: “We are really pleased with how popular our bee event turned out. Visitors were very engaged and eager to learn more about bees and their importance in the environment and we saw lots of smiling faces on the children that had taken part. It was great fun, and we’re looking forward to doing it all again!”

Our Lights Switch On Will Be A Night To Remember

There will be not one, not two, but three singing sensations at our official Christmas Lights Switch On ceremony, as well as an amazing fireworks display and the town’s very own Deputy Mayor.

The festivities kick off at 5:30pm on Wednesday 29 November, when Cllr Peter Chillingworth will take to the stage with the Children’s choir of Brinkley Primary School, performers from local stage school Theatre Train and Colchester’s very own musical celebrity, Abbie Hartley.

What’s more Father Christmas will be there, performing magic tricks, ably assisted by his very own juggling elf, and Dream 100 FM will also be on hand to help with the fun. With special late night shopping and mulled wine and mulled cider available for shoppers, it promises to be an unmissable event.

The lights will be switched on at 7pm, followed by the fireworks display.

Peter Scopes, our centre manager said: “We are all so excited for this, as it promises to be the best ever Christmas lights switch on, with a truly special, party atmosphere. The town has really come together for this; we are so proud to host so many singers and performers at what is really the most wonderful time of the year. Truly, there will be something for everyone and we are asking the whole of Colchester to come along and show their support. And for one night at least, thanks to our amazing snow machine, it really will be a white Christmas!”

RED LION YARD REFURB REVEALS HOTEL’S HISTORIC LOOK

As part of the ongoing refurbishment of Colchester’s historic Red Lion Yard to create a boutique shopping & café quarter, painstaking work has started restoring brickwork and wooden beams dating back hundreds of years that form part of the Grade I listed Red Lion Hotel.

Thanks to a special chemical treatment that dissolves and washes away layers of modern paint, the original features are gradually being revealed behind the hoardings at the High Street entrance to Red Lion Yard. Dating back to 1465, the hotel is one of the oldest inns in Britain.

The process has already uncovered previously hidden historic features including areas of wood charred by the flames of candles, which would have been used to light the hotel before electricity was installed.

Once the paint has been stripped away from the listed brick and wooden beams on the underside of the entrance to Red Lion Yard, the surfaces will be treated to create a brighter and more historically authentic appearance.

The process, which is being carried out by Norfolk-based specialists The APR Company, is designed to be kind to very old buildings and is approved by The National Trust.

John Fleming, centre manager, said:

“Red Lion Yard is being completely transformed through the refurbishment. Treating the underside of the entrance will create a brighter, more inviting entrance from the High Street.

“This is the final phase of work and we’re already seeing lots of interest from retailers and restaurant/café operators wanting to take space in Red Lion Yard and look forward to announcing further details very soon.”

The sympathetic refurbishment of Red Lion Yard has included the installation of attractive new shop fronts, improved lighting and signage and complete redecoration throughout. The floor has also been repaved with a traditional York stone.

Works are due to complete next month. The official relaunch of Red Lion Yard will take place from Thursday 24 July to Saturday 26 July with three days of family fun and an exhibition about the Yard’s fascinating past and exciting future.

Colchester-based Nicholas Percival is acting as letting agent for the available units at Red Lion Yard.

RED LION YARD REVITALISATION UNDERWAY

A £600,000 revitalisation scheme designed to give Colchester’s historic Red Lion Yard a new lease of life as a boutique shopping location will begin on Monday 20 January.

Red Lion Yard links the High Street with Lion Walk Shopping Centre and is home to the Grade I listed Red Lion Hotel and a number of independent shops, delis and hairdressers. The sympathetic refurbishment will include attractive new shop fronts and improved lighting and signage as well as painting and redecoration.

Local contractors First Choice Ltd have been appointed to carry out the works which are due to be completed in summer 2014. The revitalisation begins next week with the repaving of the floor in a traditional York stone.

Over the next few months, some of the smaller vacant units will be combined to create larger boutiques. The listed woodwork on the underside of the Red Lion Hotel entrance to Red Lion Walk will also be refurbished and returned to a brighter and more historically authentic lime-wash finish.

Max La Frenais, Director of Sovereign Land, said: “Red Lion Yard is home to some fantastic local retailers but it’s no secret that there are a number of empty units too.

“The revitalisation is designed to create a boutique feel and attract the new shoppers and businesses needed to turn Red Lion Yard into a thriving retail hub. We’re looking forward to seeing the changes come to life over the next few months.”

Colchester-based architects Stanley Bragg are behind the design of Red Lion Yard’s refurbishment and local surveyors Nicholas Percival are acting as letting agents for the available units.

RED LION YARD’S £600,000 REFURB REVEALED

The completion of the painstaking refurbishment of Colchester’s historic Red Lion Yard to create a boutique shopping and café quarter will be celebrated with three days of entertainment and family fun starting on Thursday 24 July.

Work began on the £600,000 revitalisation in January this year (2014) and has included the installation of attractive new shop fronts, improved lighting and signage and complete redecoration throughout.  The floor has also been repaved with a traditional York stone.

The refurbishment also included the restoration of brickwork and wooden beams dating back hundreds of years, in the arch that forms the High Street entrance to Red Lion Yard and is part of the Grade 1 listed Red Lion Hotel.  A special chemical process stripped away layers of modern paint to reveal the original features that have been treated to create a brighter and more historically authentic appearance.

The celebrations will get off to a roaring start on Thursday with a Chinese lion parade through Red Lion Yard at 1pm, performance from Theatretrain stage school at 1.30pm and a children’s treasure hunt.

From Thursday to Saturday, shoppers will be treated to live music and children can enjoy free face painting, see the Lego lion, take part in Lego building challenges or lion craft workshops and meet Larry the Lion as he gives out balloons.

There’s also a chance to find out more about Red Lion Yard’s fascinating history at a special exhibition open to the public from 11am to 3pm on Friday 25 and Saturday 26 July.

John Fleming, centre manager, said:

“Red Lion Yard has been completely transformed over the last few months.  It really does look fantastic and the results are already speaking for themselves with a silver jewellery specialist, nail bar and women’s fashion boutique signed up to open new stores in the near future.

“This is the start of an exciting new era for Red Lion Yard and we’re looking forward to celebrating in style at our special events this week.”

Colchester-based Nicholas Percival is acting as letting agent for the available units at Red Lion Yard.

SHOPPERS FLOCK TO LION WALK AND RED LION YARD’S SPECTACULAR LIGHT SWITCH ON

Colchester’s Lion Walk Shopping Centre and Red Lion Yard welcomed the festive season on Sunday (30 November 2014) with a day of family entertainment, a visit from Santa to switch on its Christmas lights. The annual light switch on event, which attracted 2,500 people, ended with the spectacular traditional firework show.

This year, Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard’s Christmas lights were switched on by Colchester United’s goalkeeper Sam Walker, its fluffy mascot Eddie the Eagle and Santa himself. Colchester United has recently opened a pop-up shop in Red Lion Yard that will stay open until end of January.

While tracking down the perfect gifts among Lion Walk’s big brand stores and Red Lion Yard’s quirky independents, shoppers enjoyed an afternoon of festive entertainment from local groups including the 40s harmony group Fox, Wiggle and Sass, The Valentine School of Dance, The Military Wives, Colchester Operatic Society and Theatricool.

Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard were buzzing with people from noon to the light switch on at 4.30pm and retailers across the centre have reported a successful day of trading. Costa Coffee doubled its sales compared to a normal Sunday. BHS with its three-day Black Friday event reported strong sales on the day along with Body Shop and New Look.

The Bavarian Christmas market, which is in Lion Walk until 30 December, also proved to be a huge success among shoppers wanting something warm to eat and drink on the day while temperatures were dropping.

Louise Jensen Deputy Centre Manager said: “We are very pleased with the light switch on, the Centre couldn’t have been busier. I think the combination of our big brand stores and the independent retailers, makes us such a great place for Christmas shopping. Our annual firework show is always popular and this year we had a great line up of acts to create a fun festive atmosphere.”

THE FUN DOESN’T STOP HERE – to get everyone in the Christmas spirit Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard are also putting on a busy programme of FREE festive family fun and entertainment every Saturday and every Wednesday evening, when the shops stay open to 9pm, in the run up to Christmas.

Award winning choir Funky Voices will put on a show of upbeat, foot tapping, festive songs for Wednesday’s late night shopping on 10 December to support the Rotary Club’s Christmas collection. Colchester District Pipes & Drums will provide further support to the collection on Wednesday night on 17 December.

On Saturday 13 December Colchester Operatic Society and Colchester Theatretrain will be raising the Christmas spirit in the centre.

For the final Saturday of festive entertainment (20 December) Mother Christmas makes a stop at Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard before continuing her journey back to the North Pole. She will make sure that any final Christmas wishes are reported back to Santa. Plus a brass jazz quartet will be playing festive tunes during the day.
