A special pre-Father’s Day survey carried out at Lion Walk Shopping Centre & Red Lion Yard in Colchester town centre earlier today (Saturday 20 June 2015) revealed that the gift Colchester dads would most like to receive is a car (and it’s also the gift Colchester women would most like to give their dad).

Dads were asked “if money was no object, what gift would you most like to receive for Father’s Day?”, while women were asked “If money was no object, what gift would you most like to give your dad”.  More than 35% of respondents mentioned some sort of car, while others thought even bigger -with one Dad suggesting that he might like airplane and another a yacht!

And, Colchester men are not going to be happy with just any car!   The vehicles on the town’s dads’ wish lists range from a quite modest VW Beetle via Porsche and BMW to an Aston Martin DB9, Bentley and the eye-poppingly expensive Bugatti Veyron.

Dads also requested a night out, shoes, a holiday or a gold ring.  Women wanted to buy their dad a new house (or mansion in one case) or to pay off their mortgage, or treat them to a holiday.

The good news is that some Colchester dads have their feet firmly on the ground – when asked the “if money was no object, what gift would you most like to receive for Fathers’ Day?” question, one Colchester father replied “socks”.  Guess which dad is most likely to get his wish come true!

The survey was undertaken as part of The Lions’ Den, Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard’s special Chill Out Zone for dads & their kids set up in the centre today.  With comfy seating, magazines and newspapers to read, nibbles and samples supplied by some of the businesses in the two centres, great music, table football and computer games, the “man creche” proved to be popular – the perfect antidote to a hectic shopping trip and providing a little bit of pre-Father’s Day down time for Dads.

Santa’s Magical Post Office in Colchester’s historic Red Lion Yard, which links the popular Lion Walk Shopping Centre with the High Street, has been a huge success to date with more than 600 children having already visited to write their letter to Santa and there is still plenty of time to go.

Colchester children’s wish lists have been varied but traditional toys such as LEGO (7% of kids) and “a doll” (6%) have been the most popular. One child just asked for happiness for his family.  A car, a bike, an iPad or smart phone have also been popular requests among the children.   Some really brave kids would like a dinosaur for Christmas whereas quite a few have asked for a reindeer.  Many children have said they would be happy with a surprise.

For kids who haven’t written their letter yet there is still time to visit Santa’s Post Office where Santa’s elves are on hand to help to decorate the letter to make sure each one really stands out, then post it in the enchanted Post Box and watched the letter travel all the way to Lapland on the magic map.  Santa’s Post Office is open next on late night shopping Wednesday 16 December from 4pm to 8pm and then Saturday 19 December and Sunday 20 December from 11am to 4pm. Plus Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 December.

Every letter that’s posted in the box will get a response from the big man himself, so don’t forget to include a return address!

And, Lion Walk and Red Lion Yard are grrreat places for Christmas shopping, where shoppers can be sure to track down some roaringly good gifts and fabulous festive fashions in the big brand names stores and independents stores.

Lion Walk donates new bike and scooter racks to local school

We are delighted to have donated some new bike and scooter racks to North Primary School. The racks accommodate up to 20 bicycles and 20 scooters and will help the children enjoy a more active lifestyle.

Lisa Eves, Health Coach at North Primary School, said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to Lion Walk Shopping Centre for supporting our school and donating the racks. They will make a real difference to many of our students who enjoy scooting or biking into school as well as reinforcing our efforts to encourage pupils to be more active each day.

“Through the teaching and awareness initiatives we have implemented in school, we have seen a real increase in the number of students who cycle and scoot here each day. Up until now, we hadn’t had any racks for the children which meant they had to lock them to the railings outside school which we didn’t feel was very safe.

“Now that we have a secure area on the premises, we are confident that even more students will start to scoot and cycle to school, benefitting their own health and helping to make a difference to the environment.”

Located on John Harper Street in Colchester, North Primary School educates 451 pupils between the ages of 3 and 11.  The school places a focus on healthy living and runs a number of initiatives including extra-curricular sporting activities, healthy cooking classes and an early morning fitness breakfast club to encourage children to lead healthy lifestyles.

North Primary School has also recently held its first cycling proficiency or Bikeability course for year 6 pupils in a further effort to encourage more children onto their bikes and to teach them how to use them safely when out on the roads.

Peter Scopes, Shopping Centre Manager, Lion Walk Shopping Centre, said: “We are delighted that we have been able to support these local school children by providing the racks for them to store their bikes and scooters securely during the school day.

“Encouraging kids to be healthy and lead an active life is very important and we hope that the new facilities will result in more pupils at North Primary School making their way to and from school in a fun and fit way!”

Lion Walk Shopping Centre Reports Excellence 2017

We’re delighted to report that things are looking good for Lion Walk! Despite the ever-changing, and at times particularly challenging retail landscape, we have been able to report an upturn in footfall, reflecting the enormous support given by both the townspeople and tourists in the region.

Defying some of the gloom surrounding many of the nation’s high streets, last week our Centre Manager, Peter Scopes reported an increase in visitors from 3.4 million to 3.6 million during the final quarter of 2017.

A particularly encouraging result was that Lion Walk had operated at an eight percent increase over the previous year’s figures despite the year on year national average for all UK shopping centres reflecting negative growth of -2.45 percent.

“This is immensely positive news for Lion Walk Shopping Centre,” said Mr Scopes. “At a time when the retail offering of many towns are struggling, we are going from strength to strength, thanks to a combination of exciting and determined retailers, and a hugely supportive community of shopping in Colchester, and of course, further afield.

“Highlights include a vibrant independent scene in Red Lion Yard, and the transformation of the old, empty unit previously occupied by BHS, to the massively successful and much sought after opening of Primark. “Colchester can be proud of its retail offering,” he added.
